The Gospel of Grace  &  The Brownie

I heard the story I am about to share from a pastor friend. I cannot recall if he said that it happened to he and his wife, or to another couple. While the story is very funny, the underlying symbolism is very sobering indeed.

A pastor and his wife had decided to pay a visit to the home of one of their church members. During the course of the conversation, the lady brought out a special treat for the pastor and his wife. It was a freshly baked batch of tasty looking brownies.

The lady poured some coffee for all, and they chewed on their brownies as they continued to pass the time in pleasant conversation.  Finally the pastor spoke up and said to the woman: “I do want to thank you for the delicious brownies. My wife and I have never enjoyed them so much!”

The lady replied: “Well to tell the truth, I added my own special ingredient, to give the brownies more zing.”  The pastor replied: “Well now, that’s very interesting. What is your secret ingredient if I may ask?”

The lady replied: “To be honest, I don’t think it’s a good idea to divulge the secret ingredient. You might feel uncomfortable afterwards.” So the pastor says: “Listen, don’t worry about us. We’re just interested in how you made a brownie taste so great.”

The lady hesitated at first, and then said: “Well … as I was mixing up all the ingredients together … I added in a little manure.”

Well the pastor and his wife froze for about a split-second as they looked at each other in shock, before hastily pulling out a hanky in which to spit all the contents of their mouth, while trying not to gag.

As the pastor wiped his lips with the hanky, he said: “Ma’am … I’m truly very sorry and I hope I don’t hurt your feelings … but I need to ask you a question: How much manure does it take, to ruin a brownie?“

Moral of the story

The Gospel of Jesus Christ, which states that we are saved by the grace of God alone, through the finished work of Jesus Christ at the cross – is represented by the brownie.

The manure represents all the works we think we have to do, either prior to, or after receiving Christ, in order to prove ourselves worthy, and work out our salvation.

Question:   How much manure does it take, to ruin a brownie?
